Legal Education in Crisis?

At the New York Times, Professor Stanley Fish discusses the state of legal education. Fish writes: Uneasiness about the state of legal education has been around for some time, but in the wake of the financial meltdown of 2008, uneasiness ripened into a conviction that something was terribly wrong as law school applications declined, thousands of [...]

The First Day

This fall the brunt of my blog posts will change from covering the Supreme Court to covering law school. And many of my posts will be anecdotal, about my experiences in the first year of law school. I also plan to have some of my fellow classmates write posts for the blogs. The goal is [...]

What Elective Courses Should Law School Students Take?
Also tagged administrative law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Complex Litigation, elective courses, Evidence
So after the misery of first year is over, the question for law students becomes which elective courses to take. I have a couple of thoughts on this, although I must admit that I may be misguided. So if anyone has a better answer, then by all means please share it and/or tear my opinions to shreds. I started [...]

The Case Against Law School: A Student’s View of the Law School Debate
Also tagged David Lat, George Leef, law debt, New York Times
“F*** greedy law schools” seems to be the phrase of the day. At least on the blogosphere. A few weeks ago, David Segal had an excellent expose on the culture of greed that permeates the business of law school. He appropriately entitled his piece: “Law School Economics: Ka-Ching!” The NY Times followed up with a [...]

Is Law School A Bad Investment?
Also tagged Above the Law, Elie Mystal, investment, LSAT, Shon Hopwood
It used to be that attending law school was about the best investment a young adult could make. The JD degree provided security and employment opportunities far surpassing many other graduate degrees. Oh, but the times are a changing.
Lately, the blogosphere is chalk-full of caution to those considering a legal education.

The LSAT–It’s All About Perspective
Also tagged Law School Admissions Test, LSAT, October 2010 LSAT, Shon R Hopwood
In early October, I took the rite of passage for anyone attempting to someday become an attorney: I spent six hours darkening bubbles on my Law School Admissions Test answer sheet. As I sat there during the writing section, mostly daydreaming about what it would be like to no longer have to study for the LSAT, I began to appreciate what the day represents for so many of the people taking the test with me: just another day of school.

So the last installment of my three-part series—The Global Gender Gap (#3 of 3)—is going to have to wait. I’m a little crunched this week, and there’s something else I want to write about. Today I have a yen to write about teaching and technology. Now, if you ask any member of my family regarding [...]
